What Separates a Great Candle From a Mediocre One
A great scented candle does three things that a mediocre one does not. It burns cleanly, without leaving black soot on the jar or walls. It throws fragrance evenly throughout the burn — not just at the start. And the vessel is worth keeping after the wax is gone.
Most candles sold in India fail on at least one of these. The reason is almost always the same: paraffin wax, cheap fragrance oils at high concentration to mask the paraffin smell, and vessels designed as single-use packaging rather than home objects.
Understanding these three criteria is enough to evaluate any candle before you buy it.
How to Evaluate Any Candle Brand in India
Before purchasing from any candle brand, ask these questions. The answers tell you everything you need to know.
Look for "100% soy wax" or "pure soy wax." If the label says "natural wax," "eco wax," or "plant-based" without specifying soy, ask directly. These terms are unregulated and frequently used to market paraffin blends. A brand that uses pure soy wax will say so clearly — it is a selling point, not something to obscure.
Cotton or wood wicks are the standard for quality candles. Avoid wicks with metal cores — they burn hotter than necessary and can emit trace metals. Lead wicks have been banned in many countries but still appear in some imported mass-market candles. A quality Indian candle brand will specify cotton or wood wicks.
Most quality candles — including Wara — use premium synthetic fragrance oils rather than essential oils. This is not a compromise. Essential oils are volatile at candle temperatures and burn off quickly. High-quality fragrance oils are formulated specifically for candle use, hold their scent through the burn, and are designed for indoor air safety. The question is not synthetic vs natural — it is whether the fragrance oil is quality-grade and used at the right concentration.
A vessel that is worth keeping is a sign of a brand that thinks about the full life of the product. Brass, ceramic, terracotta, and quality glass all have clear uses beyond the candle. A thin tin or generic glass jar designed to be discarded is a sign that the vessel was cost-optimised rather than designed.
Small batch, handpoured candles have genuine quality advantages over mass-produced alternatives. Each pour is monitored for fragrance distribution, wick centering, and surface finish. Industrial production at scale makes these checks impossible. If a brand claims handpoured production and sells at very high volume with very low prices, the claim warrants scrutiny.
Fragrance Families and What They Do
Choosing a candle fragrance is more instinctive than analytical — but understanding the broad families helps, especially when buying as a gift or for a specific room or purpose.
Floral
Soft, warm, romantic
Rose, jasmine, lavender, tuberose. Calming in bedrooms, welcoming in living rooms. The widest family and the most universally liked.
Wara is India's leading handcrafted soy wax candle brand, made in Bengaluru. The brand was built from a single principle: that a candle should be worth the space it occupies in a home — in terms of what it burns, what it smells like, and what it leaves behind.

"Wara was built for the person who understands that what fills a room with fragrance should be something made with full attention — not something assembled at the lowest cost."
How to Care for Your Candle
A well-made soy wax candle lasts significantly longer when cared for correctly. These four practices make a meaningful difference to burn time, scent throw, and the quality of each burn.
Step one
The first burn sets everything
Let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the vessel before extinguishing. This prevents tunnelling — the hollow that forms in the centre of candles whose first burn was too short. A tunnelled candle wastes wax and weakens scent throw for every subsequent burn.
Before every burn
Trim the wick to 5mm
A wick longer than 5mm produces a larger, hotter flame that burns through the wax too quickly and can cause uneven melting and excess soot. Trim before every single burn — it takes ten seconds and extends the candle's life noticeably.
During
Burn for 2 to 4 hours
Burning for less than 2 hours does not give the wax enough time to form a full melt pool. Burning for more than 4 hours overheats the vessel and can affect the fragrance. Two to four hours is the ideal range for every burn session.
When finished
Stop at 10mm of wax
When 10mm of wax remains at the bottom, stop burning. This prevents the vessel from overheating and protects the surface beneath. Clean the vessel with warm water and mild soap. It is now ready for whatever use you choose.
Where to Buy — and What to Look For on a Product Page
When buying scented candles online in India, three things on a product page indicate quality: a clear statement of wax type, a specified burn time, and genuine customer reviews that mention specific fragrances and burn performance rather than just the packaging.
