Soy Wax vs Paraffin Candles: Why It Matters for Your Home

Most candles in India are made from paraffin wax. Most people don’t know this. And most candle brands don’t want you to know it either.

At Wara, we use only pure soy wax. Here’s exactly why — and why it matters for your home, your health, and your money.

What is Paraffin Wax?
Paraffin is a by-product of petroleum refining. It’s cheap, widely available, and used in the majority of mass-market candles sold in India. When burned, paraffin releases toxic compounds including benzene and toluene — the same chemicals found in diesel exhaust. In a closed room, a paraffin candle can meaningfully affect air quality.

Most people burning candles at home have no idea they’re doing this.

What is Soy Wax?
Soy wax is made from soybean oil — a natural, renewable plant source. It burns cleaner than paraffin, releases no known toxins, and produces significantly less black soot. That black residue you sometimes see on candle jars or walls above candles? That’s paraffin soot. You won’t see it with soy.

5 Reasons Soy Wax is Better

  1. Cleaner air
Soy wax burns without releasing the toxic chemicals paraffin does. For homes with children, pets, or anyone with respiratory sensitivities, this matters enormously.
  2. Longer burn time
Soy wax burns slower and cooler than paraffin. A soy wax candle typically lasts 30–50% longer than a paraffin candle of the same size. You get more hours per rupee.
  3. Better scent throw
Soy wax holds fragrance oils more effectively than paraffin. The scent is released gradually and evenly rather than in one overwhelming burst at the start.
  4. Easier to clean
Spilled soy wax cleans up with soap and warm water. Paraffin wax stains fabric and is nearly impossible to remove cleanly.
  5. Better for the environment
Soy is biodegradable and sourced from a renewable crop. Paraffin is a petroleum product — non-renewable and non-biodegradable.

How to Check if Your Candle is Soy Wax
Look for these words on the label: “100% soy wax” or “pure soy wax.” If a candle says “natural wax” or “plant-based wax” without specifying soy, ask the brand directly. Many brands use blended waxes — part soy, part paraffin — and market them as natural.

At Wara, every single candle is made from 100% pure soy wax. No blends. No paraffin. No compromise.

The Bottom Line
If you’re spending money on a candle for your home, you deserve to know what’s burning in it. Soy wax is cleaner, longer-lasting, better smelling, and kinder to the planet. It costs more to make — which is why most brands don’t use it. We do.
