The Complete Candle Care Guide: How to Make Your Soy Candle Last Longer

You spent good money on a beautiful candle. Here’s how to make sure it burns perfectly every single time.

The First Burn is Everything
This is the most important rule of candle care and almost nobody knows it.
The first time you light a soy wax candle, let it burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted from edge to edge. This is called a full melt pool. For most candles this takes 2–3 hours.
If you blow it out too early, the wax develops a memory of that smaller pool. Every subsequent burn will follow the same pattern — burning down the centre and leaving a thick ring of unused wax on the sides. This is called tunnelling, and it’s permanent.
One simple rule: never cut your first burn short.

Trim Your Wick Every Single Time
Before every burn, trim your wick to 6mm. That’s roughly the length of your thumbnail.
A long wick creates a large, flickering flame that burns through wax too quickly, produces excess soot, and can cause the jar to overheat. A trimmed wick gives you a calm, steady flame, a cleaner burn, and a longer-lasting candle.
Use a wick trimmer if you have one. Small scissors work perfectly too.

Never Burn for More Than 4 Hours
After 4 hours, the wick begins to mushroom and the jar gets too hot. Both shorten your candle’s life. Burn in sessions of 2–4 hours for the best results.
Keep it Away From Drafts
Air movement — from fans, AC vents, open windows — causes uneven burning and excessive flickering. Place your candle on a stable surface away from direct airflow.
Store it Properly
Keep your candle away from direct sunlight and heat. Both will cause the wax to soften, shift, or discolour. A cool, dark shelf or drawer is ideal.

What to Do if Your Candle Has Already Tunnelled
If you’ve inherited a tunnelled candle, there’s one fix: the foil method. Wrap aluminium foil around the top of the candle, leaving a small hole in the centre for the flame. Light it and let it burn for 2–3 hours. The trapped heat will slowly melt the wax walls back down. It won’t be perfect but it works.

When to Stop Burning
Stop when there’s 1cm of wax left at the bottom. Burning below this point can cause the vessel to overheat and crack — especially wooden or ceramic bases.
